MIB Awards Two Life Lessons Scholarships
RELEASE | July 25, 2017
Braintree, MA. (July 25, 2017) — MIB Group, Inc. today announced that college students Douglas Hein of Hartford, Connecticut and Brianna Clermont of Fairhaven, Massachusetts have each been awarded a $5,000 scholarship as part of the Life Lessons Scholarship program. Their stories are both compelling and illustrative of the critical need for the type of financial protection that life insurance provides, and the struggles endured by those without it.
Douglas and Brianna were both high school seniors when they tragically lost parents. One family's life insurance was inadequate and the other had none. Both ended up living with friends early on and thereafter at relatives' homes for an extended period of time, resulting in a major disruption of their young adult lives. After several years of hardship and working multiple jobs to make ends meet, Douglas self-financed his first year in the nursing program at Capital Community College in Hartford, CT and will be using the scholarship to continue his studies this fall as he heads toward university. Brianna will be using the scholarship to attend Salve Regina University, Newport, RI this fall as a freshman.
"The struggles these young people have endured serves as a testament to the value life insurance protection provides. We hope these scholarships provide them with some peace of mind as they strive to achieve their lifelong dreams in college," says Lee Oliphant, MIB President and CEO. "Stories like these should inspire families to make life insurance the cornerstone of their long-term financial planning."
"Winning this scholarship means so much to me, and I am so grateful," Douglas said. It helps me continue my education as I head toward a nursing degree and honor my mother's legacy as a Certified Nurse Midwife. The scholarship helps me make that dream possible."
"My dad was my best friend and losing him, well—I never would have imaged my life could look like this, at a time when I should be so excited about my future. The opportunity afforded to me by attending college gives me a fresh start and the tools I'll need to achieve my goal of a successful life," Brianna said.
Life Lessons Scholarships are provided in coordination with Life Happens, a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating Americans about the importance of life insurance. Scholarships provide financial assistance to students pursuing their dreams of a college education despite having experienced the loss of a parent or legal guardian who passed away without life insurance.
Over 500 Life Lessons Scholarships have been awarded since the program was established in 2005, providing over a million dollars in funds from the financial support of the MDRT Foundation, the NAILBA Charitable Foundation, donations from Life Happens' Board of Directors, and major life insurance companies, most of which are MIB members.
