MIB Awards Two 2018 Life Lessons Scholarships
Students whose fathers had inadequate life insurance
receive scholarships and teach us life lessons by example
Braintree, MA — (September 5, 2018) — MIB Group, Inc. today announced that college students Jenna Bradley of Islip Terrace, New York and Teresa Quinn of Lancaster, Massachusetts have each been awarded a $5,000 scholarship as part of the Life Lessons Scholarship program. Their stories are both compelling and illustrative of the critical need for the financial protection that life insurance provides, and the struggles endured by those with inadequate coverage. This is the second year MIB has sponsored Life Lessons scholarships.
Jenna was in her early teens and Teresa was a high school sophomore when they tragically lost their fathers. Both spent years working at multiple jobs to help support their families; the loss of income meant a home foreclosure for one recipient, and both feared that their dreams of attending college would remain unfulfilled. While both families had some life insurance coverage on their late fathers, their situations teach very different lessons. One only carried employer-based life insurance that was woefully inadequate to support his family's needs and caused immediate hardship. The other father failed to have a life insurance policy payable to his surviving spouse or estate. After years of hard work and sacrifice, both scholarship recipients are now attending college. Jenna self-financed her first two years at Suffolk Community College and will be a junior at the State University of New York (SUNY) Buffalo this fall. Teresa will be attending the University of New Haven, New Haven Connecticut as a freshman this fall.
"The struggles these young people have endured serves as a testament to the value life insurance protection provides. We hope these scholarships provide them with some peace of mind as they strive to achieve their lifelong dreams in college," says Lee Oliphant, MIB President and CEO. "Stories like these should inspire families to make life insurance the cornerstone of their long-term financial planning."
"People always think there's time to get life insurance, but I'm here to tell you that Life Happens," said Jenna. "There are people who are relying on you. It's hard enough grieving the loss of a loved one, but suffering financial instability, particularly as a young teen will change your life forever."
"I know there's a lesson to learn in all this, and I believe it is more compelling than me just being a better person and being stronger for it," said Teresa. "I hope that telling my story will encourage others to make sure that they have life insurance coverage that will be payable to their surviving spouses so that no one will have to experience what my mother and I have unfortunately lived."
Life Lessons Scholarships are provided in coordination with Life Happens, a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating Americans about the importance of life insurance. Scholarships provide financial assistance to students pursuing their dreams of a college education despite having experienced the loss of a parent or legal guardian who passed away without life insurance.
Over 500 Life Lessons Scholarships have been awarded since the program was established in 2005, providing over $1 million in funds from the financial support of the MDRT Foundation, the NAILBA Charitable Foundation, donations from Life Happens' Board of Directors, and major life insurance companies, most of which are MIB members.
